Stirling County Rugby Football Club played host to the U15s and U18s Girls Rugby National 7s Tournament on Sunday 14th June 2015. The tournament is also used for talent spotting for the Scotland national team.

Supported by the SRU, teams from schools and clubs from all over Scotland attended as regional winners.

During the season competitions took place in each region for qualification to the finals. Stirling County U15s, undefeated this season, represented the Central Region. Eight teams in total competed in the U15s; Oban, Murrayfield Wanderers, Stirling County, Biggar, Ayr, Hillhead/Jordanhill, Montrose and a Barbarian team.

The day started off slightly wet, but that didn’t dampen the girls’ spirits. Their first pool match was against Oban finishing Stirling County 4 Oban 0.

Murrayfield Wanderers were next up - a formidable renowned opponent. This was a very exciting match finishing Stirling County 5 Murrayfield Wanders 4. Stirling County having led at half time 2 - 1, were losing 3 - 4 with two minutes to go but came from behind to score a winner in the last moves of the match. This win put the County Girls on the map of U15s girls’ rugby and a win that exceeded all expectations.

Biggar followed having beaten Murrayfield Wanderers, and were a strong physical team and the County girls moved the ball well and despite being out sized, they tackled and supported each other well. After a fast moving match the final result was Stirling County 3 Biggar 2. This again was a last minute winner for Stirling County.

As winners of their pool, Ayr stood in their way in the semi-finals. The Stirling County girls played with confidence having come through an extremely tough pool and won 7-3 dominating the game with good evasive running and support. Their reward was a final against Hillhead/Jordanhill.

After a tactical team talk from their head coach, Donna Clark, Stirling County were ready. Stirling County took an early 1-0 lead but the experienced Hillhead/Jordanhill fought hard and led 5-2 at half time. County fired back in the second half with great wing play and determination and Hillhead/Jordanhill hung on to a slender lead winning 7-6 in a nail biting last few minutes.

Well done Hillhead/Jordanhill and a very credible second place for Stirling County RFC U15 Girls in their initial full season of competitive rugby.

Head Coach Donna Clark said “This is the first time Stirling County Girls Under 15s have participated in this competition and the girls did fantastically well. I’m proud of each one of them. They worked hard as a team and have progressed really well over the season to achieve this”.
