TWO Stirling Special Olympics heroes have recently been honoured at a civic reception.

Andrew Stuart, of Dunblane, secured gold in Level 5 golf individual stroke play when he was at the Special Olympics World Games in the United Arab Emirates this March.

Cyclist Leanne Peters, who is from Strathblane, scooped silver in the 10k time trial and came fifth in the 5k time trial while finishing sixth in the 5k road race.

Both athletes, who are 19 and 34 respectively, were joined by their families as the met Provost Christine Simpson as well as other elected representatives when they shared their stories and showed off their medals.

Provost Simpson said: “It was an absolute privilege to welcome two inspirational athletes in Andrew and Leanne, along with their families, to Old Viewforth.

“To have claimed medals on the global stage and beat off such stiff competition is a remarkable achievement.”

And added: “From hearing their stories of the games, it was an unforgettable experience and one they will always cherish.

“As a council, we are hugely proud of Andrew and Leanne, and hopefully their success inspires others from across Stirling with a learning disability to follow in their footsteps and get involved in sport and physical activity.”
