SIX Wetherspoon pubs in and around Glasgow have been recognised for having “exceptional” toilets.

The Loo of the Year Awards are aimed at highlighting and improving standards of “away from home” toilet provision across the UK.

Inspectors assess the quality and standard of toilets.

They make unannounced visits to thousands of sites across the UK in order to judge them.

All of the toilets are graded from bronze to platinum with unacceptable toilets not graded at all.

The platinum rating is given only to outlets which offer “exceptional toilets.”

The toilets are judged on their décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand washing and drying equipment and overall management.

Platinum - the highest award possible - went to:

  • The Counting House on St Vincents Place
  • The Crystal Palace on Jamaica Street
  • The Hengler’s Circus on Sauchiehall Street
  • The Sir John Moore on Argyle Street
  • The Society Room on West George Street
  • The Kirky Puffer on Townhead, Kirkintilloch

The Esquire House on Great Western Road, Anniesland, won a gold rating.

The Counting House manager, Michael Murphy, said staff at the pub ensure the toilets are “in first-class condition at all times.”

He added: “It’s great this has been recognised by the inspectors.”

The Loo of the Year Awards 2018 managing director, Mike Bone, added: “The toilets at the seven pubs have been designed and fitted out to a very high standard and are both clean and well maintained.

“The pubs richly deserve their awards.”
