WANDERERS bring in the New Year with a home fixture against Perthshire tomorrow, writes John Dyer.

The game at Perth in September saw Wanderers lose 43-22, but the scoreline did not truly reflect the Greenock men's performance.

The visitors were in contention until late on when a couple of injuries and Perthshire's very quick scrum-half scored a couple of late tries.

Wanderers can take confidence from the fact Perthshire had a heavy loss away to league leaders Gordonians 104-5, so they have vulnerable areas which can be exploited.

Like most other clubs in the league there has not been a lot of activity since Christmas, although Wanderers had the Boxing Day match in which a few players put themselves in the frame for selection this week.

It is hoped that Leigh Tyley is available along with Andy McDougall as they both give stability to the backline.

In the backs, Fabiano Marturano and young Lewis McKenzie have been playing well as has Lee Houston, giving the selectors some difficult decisions to make.

This game is one that Wanderers were targeting to at least secure some points as results show that Perthshire appear not to travel well.

They also have an IP President with the name George Clooney - sorry girls, not the real one.

The 2nd XV travel to league leaders GHK and will do well to get a result.

Elsewhere on Sunday the Minis P4-7 are training at Fort Matilda from 11 to noon.

The ladies have a Come and Try Day for players over 16 years at Greenock Sports Centre from 11am to noon.

It's well worth a try for any ladies who would like to take up the sport.
