A DUNFERMLINE pub now has “peace of mind” knowing that potentially life-saving equipment is in place should anyone need it.

The Glen Tavern has installed a defibrillator which will be available to the public should anyone suffer a cardiac arrest.

The Pittencrieff Street pub held a fundraiser with regulars a few months ago and the money raised has gone towards acquiring it.

Sarah Johnston, licensee, told the Press: “The defibrillator has now finally arrived and we would like to say a big thanks to all of our regular customers for their generosity.

“Hopefully, we will never have to use this in our local community, but what a big asset it’s going to be.

“It will be powered and ready to use from 11am to 11pm, seven days a week.

“We are also getting myself and members of staff trained to use it as well.”

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a small machine which shocks a patient’s heart into restarting.

It is easy to use and is sophisticated enough to talk the user through the process, delivering a shock only when one is required.

A cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time and the employment of a defibrillator and CPR within the first few minutes after an arrest, while professional help is on its way, can increase the chances of a patient’s survival by up to 70 per cent.

The Glen Tavern’s purchase of a defibrillator continues the pub’s contributions to the community.

The Press told you last April that the pub was one of several leading efforts to ensure key workers and the elderly and vulnerable had fresh food and hot meals delivered to their doors as full UK lockdown measures were in place.
