A SCHOOLBOY is on track for success after scooping gold in a national athletics event as part of a glorious hat-trick.

Fintan Rooney claimed the national championship title for the Scottish Athletics Under 13 discus event.

As well as landing the top prize, the 12-year-old took home a silver medal for javelin and a bronze after his team came third in the relay.

Fintan is a pupil at St Columba's School in Kilmacolm.

He only started athletics in May, so says taking the top title is 'an exciting start'.

The sporting star told the Tele: "I was inspired by my brother Ryan to join athletics.

"I really enjoy it - it is something different from what I am used to.

"It was great to compete on the day.

"It was a proud moment winning the gold for discus, my family and coach were so pleased."

Fintan gained the title with an impressive 27.65m throw in the first round.

The multi-talented youngster, who also plays rugby, hopes to continue his success as into the winter.

He added: "I was really shocked but so happy to win three medals during the events.

"As it moves into winter we will start doing more events indoors, so I'm looking forward to trying the 100m and also long jump.

"I still don't know what I want to do once I leave school, but I'm definitely going to stick with athletics.

"I might pursue a career in that."
