THIS time around Emily Downie from Spyres enters the confession box to unveil her 7 Deadly Tunes.

Downie, singer and guitarist for the Glasgow-based four-piece, has a few choice tracks to share with The Weekender readers, including a few surprises.

SLOTH – What tune makes you want to sit back and do nothing forever?

Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile: Over Everything

When I found out this album was in the works I knew it was going to be special. Two of my favourite artists joining forces and creating some amazing chilled-out acoustic tunes I can’t get enough of even three years later. This song is the stand-out track for me.

WRATH – What tune makes you want to absolutely wreck the hoose?

The Jesus and Mary Chain: Upside Down

This was the first song I heard by The Mary Chain and I will always remember having the urge to completely go mad around the house when it was on. Hearing all of the feedback and noise among the vocals was so oddly satisfying to listen to.

LUST – What tune do you NEED in your life right now?

Silk Sonic: Leave The Door Open

Not a typical choice from me, but I love the 70’s vibe throughout the song and am still not tired of listening to it. A stand-out track of 2021 for sure.

GLUTTONY – What tune can you not get enough of?

The Dandy Warhols: We Used To Be Friends

I really got into The Dandy Warhols a couple of years ago and managed to pick up this record at Camden Market. This song especially is always getting played in the car or around the house. Recently this has become one of Spyres’ favourite songs.

GREED – What tune makes you want to hear more and more from that band?

Greer: Bye Bye Baby

Greer are one of my new favourite bands. Only with a handful of songs released, I’m dying to hear more from them. Hopefully one day I get the chance to see them live.

PRIDE – What tune are you most proud to have written?

One of the songs we play in our set called Test is up there as a track I’m proud of writing. This song is one of our heavier tunes and always gets the crowds moving no matter where we are.

ENVY – What tune/chorus/verse/solo/lyric do you wish you had written?

Alvvays: Saved By A Waif

I really cannot fault any song Alvvays release. Their complete discography is unmatched and are up there as my favourite band. I wish I had written the whole album never mind this one song haha. They are one of my biggest inspirations in music and have really helped influence our sound as a band.
