TWO drag queens shooting it out to the death in a deserted forest, soundtracked by a seriously crunchy groove – what is not to love?

Fake Lips' video for their debut single Fame Whore is a heavyweight of epic proportions and pays homage to the Tarantino-Cohen Brothers craft of filmmaking while serving a sonic blow to the gut at the same time.

The Livingston duo – Gary McLean and Michael Cameron – have been working on their new project for 18 months and have finally unveiled their inaugural track.

Though the song itself is not yet released, the video was uploaded to YouTube on Friday, April 10.

It was directed by Stuart Breadner and follows the warring Lacy Rain and Dharmageddon as they duel in the woods near Milngavie.

Fame Whore takes aim at those who strive for celebrity, with the band aiming to bring worlds together.

McLean, the band's singer and guitarist, tells The Weekender: "We met with an amazing filmmaker named Stuart Breadner, had some dinner and just threw ideas around.

"Me and Mike knew we wanted to have the drag queens involved, then the idea of a Tarantino-Cohen Brothers-type western came about and we were all in. It was decided pretty quickly.

"We thought the use of the drag queens and the shoot-out played extremely straight was a good way to disregard gender/sexuality stereotypes and that we embrace all.

"It's a statement of intent about our distaste for the upside-down nature of the world we live in..."

"The song is a fictional tale about someone who is desperate to be in the limelight, but for all the wrong reasons.

"We're in a band, we clearly like attention and admiration but first and foremost we love what we do. It's the old cliche but the music is the most important thing.

"I wanna give a shout out to Ross Hamilton of Bad Mannequins and Rocket Science studios; he helped us reach another level with this song and has given us a lot of help and advice out of his own spare time."

Drummer Cameron adds: "I like that the whole thing has been a labour of love and that we have such strong connections in strange worlds that normally aren't supposed to belong together: specifically club drag queens and two guys playing rock music.

"It's a statement of intent about our distaste for the upside-down nature of the world we live in. The less pigeon-holed people feel, the more they can go about enjoying their lives and creating some brilliant work."

While Covid–19 has disrupted the music industry, Fake Lips are nevertheless preparing a follow-up track in an attempt to bring a fun distraction to those during the lockdown.

Cameron says: "The inception of Fake Lips as an idea began about 18 months ago. I would have loved to have our music out a lot sooner, but we both work full-time day jobs and we wanted to make sure we were working with the right people and that we were happy with the end product.

"We've been hard at work in the practice room and in the studio the whole time, and we can't wait to push on with all the material we've got ready."

McLean continues: "We are going to just try and make people laugh and interact with them on our social media to try and give them a little bit of relief during this sh***y time

"Hopefully, this song and video provides them with some entertainment that makes them smile or dance or sing.

"We have another single recorded, but as of yet, there is no release date for that. We are putting all our energy into Fame Whore.

"Hopefully, later on in the year we can get back into the studio and record something.

"[For now] Let's all stick together: This will be over soon and we can get back to supporting our local musicians."
