PROPOSALS to revolutionise travel between King’s Park and Stirling south, especially by foot and bike, have been given the green light.

Councillors approved a proposal on June 25 for a new link road through the Council’s existing Viewforth site to help create a city centre and neighbourhoods that work for residents, businesses and visitors.

The new road, known as the Viewforth Link Road, will run between the St Ninians Road junction with Snowdon Place and the Linden Avenue roundabout.

The link road will complete the Council’s long held ambition to create an inner city ring road and reduce unnecessary traffic in the city centre, with an increase in the capacity for walking and cycling also forming a key part of the scheme.

The proposals, which date back to the Council’s City Transport Strategy of 2006, were outlined to the public in November via a series of public engagement sessions.

It includes plans to establish the Walk, Cycle, Live Stirling initiative in the City Centre South, create new 20 mph zones, new crossing points, traffic calming and a collaborative programme with communities to make neighbourhoods places for people to enjoy.

After approving the plans at today’s Planning and Regulation Panel, convenor Cllr Alasdair MacPherson said: “The construction of the Viewforth Link Road will help reduce traffic congestion that negatively impacts on historic streets, such as Dumbarton Road and Port Street, while enhancing tourist and retail uses within the city centre.

“The road will help to redistribute traffic to the south of the city centre, maintaining and improving access to the city centre and helping relieve the Craig's roundabout, while providing a new pedestrian and cycle route.”
