PASSENGERS have been left stranded after trains between Glasgow and Edinburgh were cancelled or delayed.

SoctRail tweeted that due to a signalling fault trains were reduced to a half-hourly service between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street, while some services have been cancelled.

Services were also disrupted between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.

Passengers tweeted their frustration stating they are “stranded” and "freezing" on the platform.

One commented: “It baffles me how regularly everything falls apart and people are left stranded trying to get home. How often there’s a “fault” between Edinburgh and Glasgow? Surely by now you’d have a better contingency plan?

"There are literally kids in school uniforms on the platforms who aren’t going to get home anytime soon either. And the best you can do is refund a ticket? You should be offering free hot beverages to those waiting on the platforms because it’s freezing."

ScotRail replied that the signalling fault followed an earlier trespasser on the line.

They said: “We're really sorry about the disruption this evening. We do have contingency plans, unfortunately this disruption has been caused by a trespasser on the line and then a signalling fault, it takes time to recover from these incidents.”

Another disgruntled passenger blasted: “4 cancelled glasgow trains in a row been standing here for 45 mins @ScotRail get your s**t together honestly !!!!!!!!!!”

ScotRail said the disruption was expected to last until 9 pm Tuesday evening.

By 8.45pm trains were running again between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Shotts.

But trains between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh via Falkirk High were expected to be disrupted for the rest of the day.
