A STIRLING student has been selected to compete at the UK finals of a science and engineering competition.

Fiona Campbell’s project, entitled Beast From The Yeast, caught the eye of the judges in the online heats of The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition.

She carried out research to see the effects of different household substances upon baker’s yeast.

Fiona, a pupil at McLaren High, took the project forward as she is fascinated with the world of micro-organisms and as a way of improving her lab skills.

Hilary Leevers, chief executive at EngineeringUK, said: “The student from McLaren High School really impressed the judges with their project and we’re excited to see how they do at the UK finals.

“It is a huge achievement to progress to this stage of The Competition and they should be incredibly proud to take up their place and compete at The Big Bang Fair in March.”

The finals are set to take place at Birmingham’s NEC in March.
