PUPILS and teachers at Alva Academy are getting ready to host an evening of Remembrance after taking part in many commemoration events throughout the year.

The Wee County school will host an assembly tonight (Wed, November 14) to signify the end of their year of Remembrance in which they have undertaken many trips and tasks.

Earlier in the year, 40 S2 students attended the school’s 10th annual trip to the battlefields of Belgium.

Those pupils will then showcase what they learned with a special performance at the school’s annual prizegiving ceremony in June with songs and poetry from WW1. The show will include “thought provoking, evocative readings set to music.”

Through the last week itself, pupils from across many areas of the curriculum undertake tasks. This is an interdisciplinary experience which historically has seen over 500 pupils involved in some form.

The task acts as an excellent opportunity for teachers to share their subject knowledge with teachers and pupils from out with their own subject area by writing, narrating and recording daily tannoy announcements which include songs, poems and historical facts.

Other trips included the Lady Haig poppy factory in Edinburgh, where pupils learn the history and significance of the poppy.

The final evening of Remembrance is the big showcase event tonight.

David Clifford, a teacher at the school, said: “Every year we work with various outside agencies, such as the cadets, scouts, Hearts FC and Poppy Scotland to put on a very memorable evening.

“The evening is always as successful as it is moving and over 350 people come out to both celebrate and to remember.

“Last year pupils made poppies and wrote the name of a fallen soldier on each poppy to represent each person from our local area who did not survive WW1.

“These were then floated down over the balcony as pipers played The Flowers of the Forest. The admission is free although we always collect a large sum of money which is donated to Poppy Scotland.

“Our numerous acts of Remembrance truly reflect and highlight the school values of Respect, Creativity and Service and ensure that pupils fully understand the importance of Remembrance.”

The evening will take place between 7-9pm.
