A WOMAN has been confirmed dead after being knocked down while on a charity cycle in Africa.

Jayne Gray died after she and another cyclist were hit when an inexperienced driver lost control of his car in the town of Kaloma, Zambia, according to local reports.

The 49-year-old was pronounced dead en route to the hospital while the other woman suffered a suspected fractured back.

She was on her third cycle challenge to raise funds for foreign aid charity Transaid when tragedy struck on Wednesday, September 26.

Jayne – who was a member of Stirling Bike Club – previously took part in charity rides in Tanzania in 2015 and South Africa last year, helping to raise nearly £340,000 for the charity.

She leaves behind husband Robin and teenage sons Peter and Iain.

Jayne was also a member of Central Athletic who confirmed on Facebook that she had passed away.

It read: “It is with great sadness that we have to report that one of our members, Jayne Gray, has tragically lost her life in a car accident in Zambia. She was there on a charity cycle, raising money for Transaid.

“Jayne was a committed and gutsy athlete, up for a challenge - most recently the half marathon in Iceland in June - supportive, outspoken and, most importantly, excellent company on long training runs. Banter was always of the highest order. She will be much missed by us all.

Her brother-in-law Mark Sutherland wrote under the post: “The family are devastated.”

Close pal Jan Palmer added: “Jayne was a lovely, friendly, feisty lady and I’m proud to call her my friend. She will be so sadly missed. Love to her family. RIP beautiful lady.”
