FOOTBALLERS from Doune, Deanston and Dunblane gathered over four days last week to play the traditional annual outdoor 5-a-sides tournament.

Running now for more than 30 years, the tournament continues to attract great interest, with almost 200 youngsters getting their own teams together to take part in three separate tournaments, which are now run by The Boys’ Brigade for the local community.

After midweek round-robin competitions featuring 24 different teams, the finals took place on a hot, sticky afternoon at the Dunblane Primary School Fete, attracting large crowds and great community support.

Teams represented pupils from Dunblane, Newton, St. Mary’s, Doune, Deanston and QVS primary schools as well as from QVS and Dunblane High in the S1/2 tournament.

P4/5 tournament winners were ‘Newton Wanderers’, who narrowly beat ‘Tekkerz Town’ on penalties after a 2-2 normal time scoreline in the final. Spot-kicks were also required eventually to separate the P6/7 winners (Dunblane Dynamos) from runners-up ‘Brave Bombers’. And the most unfortunate method of deciding a football match was also used on Friday night to find a winner of the S1/2 tournament, with Queen Victoria School’s ‘Volleyball Losers’ just pipping DHS pupils ‘Athar’s XI’ to the silverware.

The Boys’ Brigade would like to thank everyone for their support, but particularly Ian Maclachlan of IKM Consulting for sponsorship, Bennetts Butchers for support with catering, Stuart Ullathorne for marquee loan, and St. Andrew’s Ambulance for first aid cover. In addition, a significant number of BB boys and leaders gave their time over the three evenings and we very much appreciate their service to the community.
