Milton Amateurs have won the Douglas Smith League Cup after a dominating second half display against Doune Castle at Sauchie Juniors’ Beechwood Park as they ran out 5-2 winners.

Doune were first to strike early on in the first half after Milton failed to defend a corner. Frankie Kane then hauled Milton back into the match shortly after with an unstoppable header from a Dav McInnes cross.

In what was a closely-fought first half, Doune again took the lead from a poorly-defended corner to make it 2-1. On the stroke of half-time, Milton scored the all-important equaliser through an absolute cruise missile of a shot from Andy Grant after Doune failed to clear their box.

In the first half you could have cut the tension with a knife given how close the game was. The second half, however, was an entirely different story as Milton began to dominate with their superior passing game. A mistake from the Doune keeper at a Milton corner gifted Milton the lead shortly after the second half had started.

What happened next was the stuff of legend. Steven Knox picked up the ball near the halfway line and, spotting the Doune keeper off his line, scored an audacious attempt from nearly 40 yards to make it 4-2 to Milton.

However, Milton weren’t done yet, and Knox got his second of the night after some stout work from the defence, followed by a neat pass, which slipped him in behind the defence to curl the ball round the keeper.

A fine night for all the Milton supporters who made the short journey to Sauchie to see their team win so decisively.

Congratulations were extended to the Milton players whose excellent work-rate and superb finishing brought the cup home. Commiserations to the Doune Castle players, fans and coaches who no doubt had high hopes for their team.

The 2015 Milton AFC Player of the Year function will be held in the St. Modan’s Club on Saturday 23 May, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are 10 each and all are welcome.
