STIRLING Schools retained the Active Schools Ryder Cup with a 9.5 - 2.5 victory over Falkirk Schools at Stirling Golf Club.

The event, last held in Falkirk in 2012, was organised by Active Stirling in partnership with Falkirk Community Trust and sponsored by RJM Sports Ltd who providedt-shirts for all players.

Stirling got off to a strong start on September 29 in blustery conditions and when Craig Jackman (Dunblane High School pupil) sunk a 12 footer on the 18th hole, the home side found themselves 4-0 up after the morning’s foursomes.

Jordyn Ridley and Ben Carberry (Denny High School pupils) threatened a Falkirk comeback as they secured a point each in the opening two afternoon singles ties. However, Scott Hassell (Balfron High School) settled any Stirling nerves with a three and one victory over Cameron Potter (Braes High School) to ensure the Ryder Cup will stay in Stirling until 2018.

Tom Bradburn (Wallace High School pupil) completed the day’s play, producing some magic up the last to secure a half to finish the match 9.5-2.5; a remarkable seven out of the 12 ties going the distance over the course of the day.

Active Stirling’s school sport competition co-ordinator, Keith Glendinning said: ‘’A massive Thanks to Falkirk Community Trust, sponsors RJM Sports Ltd and our excellent hosts Stirling Golf Club for their support. The event featured qualifiers from our Stirling schools championships in June and was a continuation of the work we are doing to strengthen and develop competitive school sport pathways across Stirling.’’

Stirling Golf Club secretary, Garry Bowman said: ''Stirling Golf Club was delighted to host the Ryder Cup event contested by Stirling and Falkirk Schools.

As a club we recognise the importance of encouraging young people’s participation in golf. The committee and members were delighted to be able to offer our course and facilities and look forward to similar events being held at Stirling Golf Club in the future.''
