FREE wifi could be coming to Stirling and surrounding rural town centres as the council investigates ways to increase digital community access and boost tourism.
Approved by the local authority's Finance and Economy Committee on Thursday, November 23, the initiative will allow community councils, development trusts, BIDs and similar groups to own, manage and take control of their own service.
The council would also appoint a broadband project officer to provide support where bids are successful.
Councillor Margaret Brisley, convener of the committee, said: “Wifi can provide many benefits to both individuals and whole communities, from helping drive greater footfall, supporting the local economy, creating jobs and also making it easier for residents and visitors to access information about the area.
“As we move into a digital age it is important that the council investigate every avenue in which we can help our residents profit from this technology.”
