BEACONHURST School’s tennis ace Connor Thomson is celebrating after netting two major wins.

He won the U18 Boys’ Singles competition at the University of Bath Winter National Tour after being given a wildcard entry into the main draw.

Connor, 16, won two rounds of the British National event before winning the quarter final in two sets at 6-3 and 7-6.

He beat the first seeded player Joseph Newman-Billington in the semi-final over three sets before going on to clinch the title by beating Daniel Martin 6-3, 7-5 in the final.

Connor, an S6 Tennis Scholar at Beaconhurst, then travelled to the Dubai ITF Junior Championships where he won the doubles event with his Spanish partner Alvaro Bueno Gil and reached the semi-finals of the singles contest.

In the singles matches, he won the first two rounds before beating his doubles partner Alvaro 6-3, 6-3 in the quarter finals.

Connor then lost out to the first seed Eric Vashelboim, from Ukraine, in the semi-final.

Teaming up with Alvaro for the doubles contest, the pair beat off the competition in the early rounds before taking on Polish players Mikolaj Lovens and Karol Paluch in the final where they won after three sets.

Meanwhile, Beaconhurst pupil Ewen Lumsden and his sister Maia, a former Beaconhurst tennis scholar, have been crowned the first Tennis Scotland Open Tour champions.

They each took home the titles from the final round of the competition held at the National Tennis Centre in Stirling recently.

The contest was the final round of a new initiative aimed at encouraging more players to play competitive tennis no matter their standard.

The inaugural tournament featured more than 500 players across 18 events.

It provided them with the opportunity to go up against players of a similar standard as well as opportunities to progress and play those of a higher ranking.

Following the finals, Ewen and Maia were presented with their medals by Tennis Scotland President David Mazzucco and tournament referee Olwyn Roy.

It was the first time the Lumsdens both won the same senior competition together – and each walked away with a £700 top prize.

Maia said: “I am really happy to win the first Tennis Scotland Open Tour.

"It is also pretty cool to win the same tournament as my little brother for the first time.”
