THE National Wallace Monument in Stirling is offering free admission for St Andrew's Day.

On Thursday, November 30, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in history, and experience Sir William Wallace's life, discover who he was, where he came from, and how he came to lead an army as a defender of freedom from oppression for the people of Scotland.

Live actor performances of Scotland's National Hero will take place at regular intervals throughout the day, starting at 11.15am.

The free entry offered by Stirling District Tourism, the charity that runs the self-funding visitor attraction, was launched 10 years ago and, since then, over 10,000 people have taken up this opportunity to visit the monument.

Ken Thomson, of Stirling District Tourism, said: "Offering our visitors the chance to explore the monument for free in celebration of the Scotland's patron saint gives tourists and locals alike the opportunity to discover more about the National Hero, William Wallace.

"We hope that those who have always wanted to experience the attraction will take advantage of this special offer."

As well as enjoying the actor performances, visitors will be able to explore the magnificent monument itself where Wallace's life and legacy is told in three galleries, one of which features his legendary battle sword.

An impressive 246 steps can be climbed to reach the top of the monument, where visitors can stand in the crown and take in the breathtaking 360-degree view of central Scotland and the Highlands to the north.

Free admission will be given to all visitors who wish to climb the monument on St Andrew's Day.

Normal admission charges are applicable again from Friday, December 1.
