STIRLING Council will implement a fresh approach to delivering sport, physical activity and wellbeing services through the creation of a not for profit, wholly owned charitable trust.

At a meeting of the council on Thursday, September 28, councillors voted to undertake a full reconstitution of Active Stirling Ltd to create a new reinvigorated trust to deliver the local authority's ambition.

The approach follows the decision in February to undertake a comprehensive business case review to establish the most effective and efficient way to extend the reach and impact of sport, physical activity and wellbeing services.

The in depth review concluded that a full reconstitution of Active Stirling would allow the council to instil and maintain a clear direction for the organisation, whilst retaining a degree of continuity for staff and customers.

Stirling Council leader, Councillor Scott Farmer, said: “Reducing health inequalities is a key priority for us, and we want to make sure that everyone can access opportunities for sport, physical activity and wellbeing – from the elite athlete to the first time gym user, from the Marathon runner to the Sunday walker.

“This decision is a very positive step forward that signals to communities, clubs and the wider sporting community locally and nationally, that we are committed to delivering a fresh approach.

"We want people of all ages, all abilities and from across the whole of the Council area, to be as active as they can be and derive all the benefits that participation in sport and physical activity can offer.”

A spokesperson for Active Stirling said: “We look forward to working with Stirling Council to provide sport, physical activity and wellbeing services across Stirling, and working with communities, customers, partners and clubs to encourage more people across the Stirling area to be more active, more often.”
