SCORES of shoes were donated by kind-hearted pupils at Beaconhurst School for a Unicef appeal.

The school's parent association held a collection in a bid to help the organisation's ShoeShare initiative, which supports educational programmes around the world.

A total of 279 pars of school shores, trainers and other footwear were collected following the appeal from PTA chair Dawn Keith.

She said: “I’m very pleased with the response to the appeal which was a good way for Beaconhurst pupils to help children who are not as fortunate as themselves.

“The shoes are recycled and the funds raised are used to provide educational equipment for schools.

“This was a great opportunity for our children to recognise that not everyone has the same chances in life and to do what they can to try and improve other children’s experiences.”

The Unicef programme delivers resources to help vulnerable children – as well as providing basics like pens and jotters, the scheme also supports the training of teachers and works with governments to improve standards.

Beaconhurst headteacher Sandra Bannerman said: “We are delighted to support this essential and worthwhile Unicef initiative and do whatever we can to ensure children around the world get the kind of access to education which every child deserves.”
