A team of Beaconhurst tennis players are heading to the Scottish Semi-finals of the British Tennis Schools Championship tomorrow (Thursday 27 August).

The girls’ squad – which includes Andy Murray’s 12-year-old cousin Cora Erskine – will play against a team from the High School of Glasgow in a series of singles and doubles matches.

Cora and her teammates Jodie McLelland, Maia Montgomerie and Abbie Kerr will be hoping to make it through to the Scottish final of the annual Aegon Team Tennis Schools Championship next month.

Last year, the girls won the Scottish final and went on to win the North Britain final of the prestigious UK-wide contest.

They then gained a creditable third place in the overall final.

Tomorrow’s competition – which takes place in Newlands, Glasgow - will be the girls’ first tournament since starting the new school term.

In June, three of the team members – Jodie, Abbie and Maia - were part of the successful squad that won the Scottish Schools Tennis Team Championship in Edinburgh.

Beaconhurst’s director of sport Judith Ramsay is looking forward to a new season of great tennis competition with the squad.

She said: “The girls have been training hard throughout the summer and are ready for the next stage of the Aegon competition after winning several matches to make it through to the semi-finals.

“Last year they were part of the Year 8 contest and made it to the UK final.

“This year, they have moved up to the Year 10 section where the competition will no doubt be tougher among the older girls.

“But all four of them are ready to rise to the challenge and we’re looking forward to a great day of tennis tomorrow.”
