Stirling’s National Wallace Monument has a new name - ‘Monument to a Brave Heart’.

Its new Mandarin title was proposed by Chinese travellers who voted in the VisitBritain ‘GREAT Names for GREAT Britain’ campaign.

Chinese names have been proposed for 101 famous landmarks across the country – from Land’s End to Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, and now VisitBritain will be working with all of the nominated attractions involved to decide how they might use the results and the publicity which the campaign has generated.

Joss Croft, marketing director at VisitBritain, said: “The campaign has given The National Wallace Monument huge exposure across China, and the opportunity to create a unique affinity with potential Chinese tourists.

“We hope that the Monument’s new Mandarin name raises its profile and enables it to compete effectively for the world’s biggest outbound market, which can help to support growth and employment in Stirling”.

The Monument’s new name was welcomed by the chair of Stirling District Tourism, Zillah Jamieson, who commented: “In 2015 we will be marking the 20th anniversary of the European premiere of the film Braveheart (held in Stirling in 1995), and the enduring popularity and appeal of the film, which introduced the story of William Wallace to millions of people worldwide, is reflected in these choices.

“It is always a privilege for us to be able to welcome visitors from different countries all around the world, and we’re especially pleased that this campaign has made it possible for so many Chinese travellers to show their enthusiasm for the National Wallace Monument, and their interest in the story of ‘Scotland’s Braveheart’.”
