A Buchlyvie fundraiser helped net a £50,000 donation for families who are cared for by Children’s Hospice Association Scotland.

Libby Emmerson organised the first black tie ball held by the John Hartson Foundation, the charity founded by the former professional footballer following his life-threatening battle with cancer.

The star-studded event in Glasgow’s Thistle Hotel was attended by Scots actors Martin Compston and Gianni Capaldi, who are both patrons of the Foundation, Celtic midfielder Kris Commons and his partner Lisa Hague, former First Minister Lord Jack McConnell, and a host of other celebrities.

The ball raised £110,000 and Children’s Hospice Association Scotland’s Robin House in Balloch was chosen as the beneficiary.

Libby (39), who joined the Foundation as its first fundraising manager UK in October 2013, accompanied ex-Celtic stars John and Murdo MacLeod to present the £50,000 cheque at the Loch Lomond centre.

They met some of the children, families and staff and heard how the donation will help make a difference to their lives.

Robin House is part of the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) - the only charity providing hospice services in the country for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions.

Libby, a mum-of-two, said: “I am thrilled we were able to make this donation to Robin House, where the staff do such fantastic work to help children and their families at a time when they need it most.

“I love my job and I’m delighted that with the help and dedication of the John Hartson Foundation’s fantastic supporters we have been able to donate this £50,000 and hopefully make a difference to their lives.” John said: “As someone who survived serious illness, I am always amazed by the courage and good humour shown by these little ones and their families in a very difficult situation while they are often facing such gruelling treatments and disruption to their family life.” Nicky Bridges, clinical nurse manager for Robin House, thanked the Foundation team and said they were delighted with the visit of the former footballing legend: “The hospice is a really special place and John and his guests were able to see how we help families and why their fundraising is important as it allows us to support families when they need it most.” Libby is now busy organising the Foundation’s events programme for 2015, which include a celebrity golf day at five-star Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort, Bishopton, on Tuesday 21 April, the BraveHart Ben Nevis Challenge in July and the John Hartson Foundation Ball on Saturday 17 October.
