Thousands of people descended into Stirling at the weekend to enjoy a host of major homecoming events.

Pipefest kicked off Stirling’s Big Weekend, led by Europe’s only private army, the Atholl Highlanders.

Thousands of pipers marched from Stirling Castle and through Stirling to the cheers of the crowds that gathered.

Next on the agenda was Armed Forces Day which was held at the foot of the Castle, providing spectacular views. Veterans, soldiers, visitors and politicians joined together to commemorate the dedication and hard work of the British armed Forces.

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond commented: “Stirling has taken centre stage this weekend with a number of high profile events; from Armed Forces Day National Event to show our respect to serving soldiers, veterans and military families and their selfless service to preserve our democratic freedoms, to Bannockburn Live which celebrates our cultural and ancestral heritage.

“The city’s rich history, beautiful landscapes and attractions have captured the imagination of those who have traveled from far and wide to be here and celebrate one of the biggest weekends in Stirling has ever seen. And, in this year of Homecoming, we are showcasing the very best of Scotland – something we have certainly achieved this weekend.” Over the weekend, Bannockburn Live attracted over 20,000 visitors with battle re-enactments and live music to commemorate 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn Stirling MP Anne McGuire tweeted: “Lovely afternoon at Bannockburn Live. Music, sunshine and crown enjoying the re-enactment. Great weekend in Stirling.” With such an action packed weekend, it was no surprise that the fun continued well into Saturday evening. The rain didn’t deter an out door screening of Sunshine on Leith at the Old Town Jail. Cinema goers enjoyed an atmospheric screening, accompanied with gourmet street food from the Loving Food truck.

Later on in the evening, locals of Stirling were treated to a firework display by the Wallace Monument.

After a weekend full of adventure and celebrations, Stirling residents could breathe a sigh of relief on Sunday night knowing that their visitors whole heartedly enjoyed their time in the city.

Many people have taken to Facebook with their photographs of the weekend to share with friends from further afield, one of whom James Stewart, allowed us to print his pictures of Pipefest.

Stirling’s Provost Mike Robbins, was proud of Stirling, and commented: “We’re privileged and proud to be hosting a fantastic weekend of events, with something for everyone. It’s a fantastic, family-friendly weekend and one of the biggest and most colourful celebrations the city has ever seen. It’s also a great opportunity for us to build Stirling’s reputation as a fantastic place to live, work, learn and visit.”
