The MSP for Clackmannanshire and Dunblane, Keith Brown, is wishing Andy Murray the best of luck as Wimbledon starts today (Monday).

And he has welcomed new research showing Scottish Government investment in grassroots sports to support the next generation of Scottish sport stars.

Figures from the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) show that Legacy 2014 Active Places Fund has distributed £10m to 188 projects across Scotland – while the Big Lottery Fund Scotland has given out £6.4 million in grants to 4,192 projects to encourage grassroots participation in sport.

Commenting, Mr Brown said: “Andy Murray’s success has been inspiration for so many aspiring young sportspeople both locally and across Scotland, and I know I speak for people across the country when I wish him the very best of luck at Wimbledon this week.

“The positive example set by people like Andy Murray is a key part of inspiring our young people into sport – but we must also ensure that the infrastructure and opportunity is there for people to get active in our communities.

“That’s why it’s so positive that almost 200 projects across Scotland have benefited from the 2014 Commonwealth Games Legacy fund, and more than 4000 projects in communities across the country have received grants from the Big Lottery Fund Scotland.

“This vital Scottish Government support can only encourage more young people to get involved in sport – boosting their health and well-being and potentially creating the next generation of Scottish sports stars to follow in the footsteps of icons like Andy Murray.”
