Beaconhurst pupils were celebrated for their sporting prowess at the school’s annual prize giving ceremony.

A total of 46 secondary pupils were given School Colour Awards which highlight sporting achievement both in performance and representing their school plus in supporting their fellow athletes.

Meanwhile, Triathlon scholars Jodie Currie and Gregor Malcolm received international blues for reaching national and international level in their sport.

Director of sport Judith Ramsay said: “Once again it’s been a fantastic year for sport at Beaconhurst and we were delighted to reflect that in the awards handed out at prize giving.

“I’m proud of all those involved in the various competitions which have seen us demonstrate great success this year.

“I’m also pleased that we were able to introduce swimming as one of our key Beacon sports this year and appoint our first ever Swim Scholar Logan Eason.

“I’m now looking forward to another year of sporting success and, perhaps more importantly, participation across the whole school.

“We have 319 places booked in lunchtime and after school sports clubs each week alongside bespoke training for some of our performance athletes so it’s going to be a busy and active year.”

Beaconhurst’s sporting highlights this year include:

Tennis:

* The Girls Squad – Captain Jodie McLelland, Maia Montgomerie, Abbie Kerr and Kirsty Robertson – won the Scottish final of the annual AEGON Team Tennis Schools Championship. The team – with Andy Murray’s cousin Cora Erskine stepping in for an injured Maia Montgomerie – then took second place in the North Britain final of the UK-wide contest.

* In September, the same Girls’ Squad will head to the Scottish Finals of the competition after beating St Georges’ School and George Watson’s College in April.

* The Girls Squad – with the addition of new pupil Rosie Sterk to the squad - also took third place in the Scottish Schools Tennis Team Championship in Edinburgh in June. In the same competition, the Boys Squad – made up of Ewen Lumsden, Cameron Kerr, Lewis and Calum Bowmaker, Sam Quinn, Chris Horgan and Ruaridh Boyd - were in fourth place.

Triathlon:

* A ‘Triathlon Academy’, supported by Triathlon Scotland and led by head coach Gordon Crawford, has been developed to integrate top athletes at the University of Stirling with some of Beaconhurst’s most promising senior pupils. This means university students – including former pupil and tri scholar Florie McLeish – can support and mentor the school’s triathletes.

* At the 2016 European Aquathlon Championships in Châteauroux, France, S5 pupil Jodie Currie came fourth in the 16-19 age category narrowly missing out in a bronze medal. Meanwhile in the same age group, Daniel Hesp finished in first place by nearly a minute but lost out on the Gold medal after he was disqualified from the event for losing his race number.

* The Scottish Schools Aquathlon Championships held in April at East Kilbride featured 300 competitors from a total of 55 schools. S6 pupil and Tri Scholar Gregor Malcolm won Gold in the S5/6 Boys Race. And in the mixed relay the Beaconhurst team - made up of Gregor Malcolm, Jodie Currie, Carrie Banks and Ben MacMillan – took Bronze in a closely contested race.

Cross Country:

* At the Scottish Schools’ Cross Country competition in Dunblane, 11 pupils competed in the Junior event with a record number of 30 senior pupils taking part in the Secondary School contest. There was Gold for Jodie Currie in S5/6 girls’ category while Jack Kerr won the Bronze medal in the same age group. Tom Graham-Marr won Silver in the S3/4 boys contest and there was an overall Silver medal for the Boys S3/4 team. Meanwhile, S1 pupil Carrie Banks did exceptionally well to take 4th place in the Girls S1/2 age group.

* And at the Kirkcaldy Primary Schools Cross Country competition for all Scottish schools, Elise Graham-Marr won the first ever P6 medal for Beaconhurst. She took silver after leading the field for much of the race.

Swimming:

* Swimming has been introduced as one of the key Beacon Sports with pupils now learning to swim in Juniors 1 and 2 and taking part in the annual swim gala from their very first year at school.

* At the Central Schools’ Swimming Championships held at the Peak in November, Beaconhurst pupils won a total of 12 gold, 10 silver and four bronze medals. The impressive medals haul meant that both the junior and senior boys teams were placed second overall in the annual competition. Meanwhile, the event saw eight pupils - the highest number ever – plus the junior school boys relay team qualifying for the Scottish Schools’ Swimming Championships.

* At the Scottish Schools’ Relays Contest held at the Commonwealth Pool in June, the boys S3/4 team had an outstanding series of performances dominating their heats and taking bronze in the finals. Several of the boys in the team – made up of Ben MacMillan, Logan Eason, Daniel Hesp, Lewis Downie and Tom Graham-Marr (reserve) – will qualify for the same age category in 2016 meaning some exciting prospects for the year ahead.

Golf:

* Now in its third year, the golf programme has expanded to include a mini golf tier and a junior development programme as well as the established senior development squad.

* At the Stirlingshire Schools’ Golf Championships, members of the development squad secured first and second position in the nett competition. Harry Robertson won Gold while Cameron Pender took the silver medal.

* All 22 Beaconhurst golfers were involved in a fundraising day to raise money for a new indoor golf facility in May. The pupils had to hit the ball the length of Scotland with distances carefully calculated by head coach Tim Mitchell. They covered the 633,000 yards from Gretna to John O’ Groats and managed to raise around £5,100 during the event which included games, sponsorship and home baking.
