It’s been a particularly busy end to the week for Rotarians from the Bridge of Allan and Dunblane Rotary Club, and, indeed, for the Interact Club (junior members of Rotary) at Queen Victoria School.

Last Thursday morning at the school assembly, president Mary Fraser presented certificates to pupils from Queen Victoria School who had undertaken either 50, 100 or 200 hours of volunteering in the community.

Of particular note was the achievement of Rebeca McQuater who received the Rotary Club of Bridge of Allan and Dunblane Volunteer of the Year Award, and was also presented with a cheque.

However, even earlier than the presentation at Queen Victoria School, golfers were teeing off on Thursday morning from 7.30am at the Dunblane New Golf Club, which had generously donated use of the course for the day.

Around 220 golfers from across Scotland, including four teams from Oban, took part, with the proceeds from this annual Rotary Club Am-Am going to the Strathcarron Hospice.

After a very successful day, over £11,000 was raised. Those taking part were blessed with perfect weather: sunny, with only a light breeze, which was fortunate as the last foursome only got back to the clubhouse as dusk was falling at 10pm.

Competitors entered into the spirit of the event, taking part in the raffle and generously contributing at the refreshment stall where tea, coffee and home-made baking were available.

Winners of the competition for the foursome with the best score were The Regional Exiles: Andy Sturgeon, Liz Milligan, Cecilia Kenny and Iain Kenny. Iain also won the prize for the Best Individual Score. Winners of the Yellow Ball competition were The Oban Memorials.

On Thursday evening, Caitlin Yool, outgoing president of the Interact Club, came to the golf club where president Mary Fraser was pleased to confer on Caitlin honorary membership of the Rotary Club.

Praising the work done by Caitlin, president Mary said: “You have been an outstanding president of the Interact Club, giving wonderful leadership and generating enthusiasm for all the club’s activities during the year. You have been an inspiration, and we wish you every success in the future."

On Friday afternoon, president Mary and other members of the club were guests at the Queen Victoria School Grand Parade, which was led by Caitlin, the senior monitor, who received the Prince Philip Medal for outstanding contribution, participation and achievement during her time at the Queen Victoria School.

The medal was presented by the inspecting officer, provost Mike Robbins.

At the meeting of the club on Thursday, June 30 at the Westlands Hotel, Doune Road, at 6pm for 6.30pm, the speaker will be Kirsten Strachan who will talk about making a career in science.

Visitors are always very welcome to attend.
