Young athletes from Bridge of Allan Primary School enjoyed an action-packed morning at their annual Sports Day.

Pupils competed for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in long-distance races, sprints, hurdles and other track and field events during the contest at the University of Stirling.

The event, for youngsters from P3-P7, also featured a non-competitive fun festival where pupils could opt to take part in team games including a tug of war between parents and children.

Those taking part in the athletics contest faced six events – long jump, 100m sprint, 100m hurdles, a beanbag throwing contest, speed-bounce and a long distance run of either 400m, 600m or 800m round the track.

Each event was followed by a medal presentation and the P7s held their annual Championship Contest with points from every medal totted up as the day unfolded.

The competition ended with Ingrid Arthur declared winner of the girls’ contest and Sam Metcalfe the boys’ winner.

Ingrid won Golds for the hurdles race, speed bounce, throwing and 100m sprint plus Silver for the Long Jump and Bronze for the 800m race to emerge the clear winner of the girls’ contest with Erica Thornton in second place.

Sam took Gold in three of the six categories – 100m sprint, hurdles and the 800m – in a close run competition with Spencer Moreland as the runner-up.

Pupils and PE teacher Alan Watt from Wallace High School, Bridge of Allan minister Dan Harper, parent Ewan McQueen, Active Schools Officer Jo Clark and James Mayley from Stirling University helped organise the day with support from staff and teachers.

Bridge of Allan Primary School’s depute head teacher Julie Russell said: “We enjoyed a fantastic sports day with dry weather and a great variety of activities for the pupils.

“The day was a resounding success and our thanks go to Stirling University for their support in providing the facility and volunteers as well as the many other people who helped.

“All pupils should be so proud of the effort they put into the events. It was a display of talent, courage and determination.”
