WEE COUNTY outdoor enthusiasts are being invited to a fundraising challenge next year, climbing the highest peak in Africa to help people on the continent.

The initiative is being taken forward by Alloa man Gary Drummond, who is currently registering Drummond Charity Works Africa.

Plans are to scale Mount Kilimanjaro, which stands 5,895meters above sea level, over seven days at the end of next July.

Inviting people along, the charity said on social media: “In January Drummond Charity Works Africa opened an office in Arusha, Tanzania, only a few miles away from the foot of the mountain.

“Just looking up at the snow covered top is amazing, imagine the view from the peak.”

Those taking part will climb around 4,900m in seven days and Gary is looking to get names on the list early.

Gary, who has an interest in the medical field and has been a keen fundraiser over the years, recently decided it was time he set his own organisation up and has been growing a base of volunteers in the third world.

He previously went to Africa to volunteer in hospitals and collected cash to fund treatment for people in need.

The charity mainly operates in Tanzania and Ghana at the moment and there are plans to branch out further.

Recently, Gary has been overseeing the construction of a toilet at a Ghanaian school, where children had no facilities whatsoever and simply used two holes in the ground with no privacy to be had.

The structure has now been built, Gary told the Advertiser, and he is just waiting on the carpenter to finish the roof.

Anyone interested in the Kilimanjaro climb between July 26 and August 4 next year, or those who would like to help the charity in any other way, can get in touch with Gary and gdfundraising@outlook.com or fund Drummond Charity Works Africa on Facebook.
