DATA from the RAC foundation has shown that a higher proportion of young drivers in Fife, Tayside and Central Scotland are involved in crashes compared to the rest of the UK.
According to the figures, 13.1% of all casualties involve a driver between the ages of 17-19 years which compares to the UK average of 11.9%.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP and Times columnist, Murdo Fraser, has called on young drivers to take a zero-tolerance policy towards drinking and driving which can play a part where accidents typically increase as a result of difficult road conditions.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said: “Many motorists are still tempted to drink and drive but I would encourage them to think again after looking at these statistics.
“The fact that new drivers are involved in a significant proportion of casualties is concerning and this can be exacerbated at a time of year when road conditions are at their most dangerous.
“It’s important that young drivers respect road conditions in Tayside and Fife especially in light of these statistics, and I would encourage them to pursue advanced motoring courses and take care.”
