A SKILLED carver and sculptor gave a talk on 'The Royal Palace of Stirling – A Grand Design' for the Auchterarder & District Local History Association.
John Donaldson spoke about his work on the heraldic carvings for the ceiling at the palace and was awarded a seven year contract by Historic Scotland back in 2004.
His task was to make accurate copies of the 33 existing roundels and produce two lost ones based on drawings. He was to design and produce 15 heraldic carvings, six ‘castle mice’, and an extra four copies for interpretative purposes.
After five years, John began to feel he knew something of the workmen who had produced the original carvings, their strengths and weaknesses, and using tools that barely differed from his own.
