AN ALLOA store is under investigation after it sold expired baby medicine to a Wee County mother.

Savers has confirmed it will conduct a full internal inquiry into the sale of a bottle of cough syrup for toddlers aged one and over, which had gone out of date in June of this year.

Michelle Saltan, a student originally from Italy, had purchased the Tixylix product for her 14-month-old child on Monday, November 6, from the health, home and beauty business’ Mill Road branch.

She told the Advertiser: “I gave it to my baby without looking at the expired date then I saw she was having symptoms [of diarrhoea]. I couldn’t sleep all night because I was so worried and I had to watch my baby.”

On her return to the shop, Michelle realised the syrup was not the only medicine which had expired when she picked up Abidec multivitamin drops that were dated October 2017.

She added: “I went to the shelf and this type (the Tixylix product) wasn’t there anymore and then I saw baby vitamins which had expired.

“I found the manager there and he said it was hard to believe. I invited him to the shelf and showed him, and asked him kindly to check his stock.

“I think this behaviour is quite dangerous. To minimise it, it’s irresponsible. I expected him to apologise. He said he can offer me a refund but I didn’t want a refund, I just wanted something done.

“I thought I should let him know because other parents might go to this shop.”

The Advertiser was then able to purchase a similar Tixylix cough syrup product for babies aged three months and over, on Tuesday, November 7, which had an expiry date of March 2017 - meaning it had been out of date for eight months.

Michelle now wants to raise awareness on the matter and has urged fellow parents to be careful by checking expiry dates when they purchase medicine for their children.

She said: “It’s not shampoo, it’s baby medicine. This is dangerous. We need to be sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Savers has assured it is a responsible retailer and takes complaints extremely seriously. The company has said it will be acting on this incident with a matter of urgency.
