FEARS have been raised over road safety near Alva Academy after a young girl was ‘hit’ by a car last week.

The 12-year-old was struck by a vehicle reversing on nearby Greenhead, outwith the school grounds, during the morning drop-off.

Police confirmed the youngster was uninjured, but told the Advertiser that the driver of the car has not yet been traced.

Concerns have also been raised about cars entering the school car park and officials have called for parents to obey the traffic system that is already in place.

A statement from the school read: “At the front gates our traffic management system of operating a drop-off/pick-up zone for parents bringing and collecting pupils to school by car operates with some success.

“This system is designed to ensure that all pupils are safe with moving traffic within the school grounds.

“While the majority of car users are cooperative, concerns have been raised again about the number of vehicles entering the school car park.

“Following an incident that has been reported to the police, the situation is now urgent and I would ask that all parents comply with the system. This will help us manage the school grounds safely and effectively.

“Therefore, please do not bring cars into the school car park unless special permission has been granted. Instead please use the specially-designated drop-off/pick-up zone on Academy Avenue.

“I would also request that a drop-off at the back of the school should occur well away from the back gates where there are a lot of children.

“The vast majority of parents are supportive and we are very grateful for their cooperation. They appreciate that some inconvenience is a preferred option to a pupil or person being injured.”

A spokesperson for Clackmannanshire Council added: “The safety of our young people is our priority, and we operate a pick up system which is designed to keep them safe.

“We ask for the cooperation of all parents and carers to ensure the system operates successfully. The incident on Thursday happened outside school grounds and nobody was injured.

“It is now a police matter and it would not be appropriate to make any further comment.”

Officers are trying to gather more information about the recent incident and have issued a plea for information.

A spokesperson said: “Police in Forth Valley are continuing to conduct enquiries after a car came into contact with a 12-year-old girl whilst reversing on Greenhead in Alva around 8.20am on Thursday, November 2.

“The child was uninjured; however, officers are eager to trace the driver involved and anyone with information is asked to contact Alloa Police Station via 101.”
