STIRLING’S MSP Bruce Crawford has written a further letter to the Foreign Secretary following conversations with Detained in Dubai, an organisation dedicated to protecting human rights at the hands of legal authorities in the United Arab Emirates, about the case involving Jamie Harron from Stirling.

Mr Crawford has called on the Foreign Office to put pressure on the Dubai authorities in order to ensure that they understand what impact cases such as these have on tourism in the UAE.

Mr Crawford has also called for further action to be taken to update the UK public on the dangers of travelling to this country.

Commenting, Bruce Crawford said: “This whole ordeal must be a harrowing experience for Mr Harron and his family and it is crucial that the Foreign Office uses every diplomatic tool at its disposal without hesitation to ensure that he is returned home safely and as soon as possible.

“Travel advice from the Foreign Office does not detail the dangers of travelling to the United Arab Emirates as is evidenced by a number of cases, such as Mr Harron’s, where UK tourists have faced a harsh justice system with disproportionate sentences.

“This case, and others similar, are bound to make people question why on Earth anyone would ever choose to go on holiday to Dubai. That is why, in my subsequent letter to the Foreign Secretary, I have also called for travel advice for this region to be updated in order to reflect the risks people have experienced.”
