A COMMEMORATIVE plaque has been installed at Galashiels railway station to mark the centenary of the Jellicoe Express passing through the town.

On Sunday members of the Borders Railway Community Partnership and Galashiels Community Council welcomed Captain Chris Smith, the most senior naval officer in Scotland and John Jellicoe, grandson of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe to the town for the occasion.

The signage was erected to remember the train service which operated during World War One.

It transported troops from London Euston to Thurso, passing through Galashiels and it is credited with carrying 475,000 passengers between February 15, 1917, and April 30, 1919, as well as carrying mail.

The plaque is just one of a few that have already been installed at stations where the Jellicoe Express was known to have stopped on its journey.

Also attending the event was Lindley Kirkpatrick from the Borders Railway Programme Executive at Scotrail; Harry Scott Galashiels and District councillor; Judith Cleghorn, Chair of Galashiels Community Council; Mags Fenner, Chair of Borders Community Rail Partnership and John Yellowlees Scotrail Community Ambassador.
