THE National Wallace Monument in Stirling is set to host an action-packed weekend this month as part of Scotland's Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology.

The 2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology shines a spotlight on Scotland's fascinating past, on some of the country's greatest figures, attractions, icons, as well as its hidden gems.

Combining Scotland's captivating history and fascinating archaeology, Abbey Craig Through The Ages will take visitors back in time, to discover more about some of Scotland's most famous warriors and reveal the Abbey Craig's forgotten history, on guided walking tours, conducted by local archaeologist Dr Murray Cook.

Visitors will also experience live actor performances and an array of family friendly activities such as children's face painting and dress up costumes.

Standing on the summit of the historic Abbey Craig, The National Wallace Monument tells the life and legacy of William Wallace in three galleries, one of which features his legendary battle sword.

An impressive 246 steps can be climbed to reach the top of the Monument, to the Crown, with a breathtaking 360-degree view of central Scotland and the Highlands to the north.

Stirling, Scotland's ancient capital, has played an important role in Scotland's past - Romans, Vikings, Angles and Picts are all linked to this area.

This special weekend will shed light on the story of these ancient tribes, as well as giving visitors the chance to learn more about William Wallace, Scotland's National Hero.

Ken Thomson, marketing manager at Stirling District Tourism, the charity that operates the Monument, said: "We are very excited to be marking Scotland's Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology.

"Visiting The National Wallace Monument is about as close to living history as you can get, and we look forward to welcoming visitors from all over Scotland, and further afield, to discover the hidden secrets of this incredible place."

The National Wallace Monument is located just outside Stirling and free car parking is available to visitors.
