THE sports development team at Clackmannanshire Council hosted the first soft archery competition for school pupils.

Active Schools partnered with Scottish Archery as part of a pilot programme to introduce primary aged children to the popular Olympic sport.

Eighteen pupils from P2-P7 took part in the contest at Alva Academy and throughout the event they had the opportunity to shoot nine arrows per match.

Alan Martin, executive development officer from Scottish Archery, said: "This is a brilliant turn out for the first event.

"The children are showing great technical skills already and the standard of shooting is very high."

Highlight of the competition was the score of 83 out of a possible 90, from Dominic Smith of Deerpark Primary School.

Parents event had the chance to try out the sport in a fun session with their youngsters in P2/P3.

Results from the day saw Emily Stephen, Strathdevon, win in the P2/3 category, with fellow school pupils Samuel Nugent in second and Rebecca Nugent in third.

Lilianna Way, Strathdevon, was first in the P4 category, with Kai Smith and Jamie McInroy from Coalsnaughton in second and third respectively.

Then in the P5-7 category, Dominic Smith from Deerpark came in first, followed by Billy McLaren, Coalsnaughton, in second and Shane Ferguson, Deerpark, in third.

Sports development is rolling out soft archery across their Active Summer programme and will be introducing the sport across more schools in the new academic year.
