THE University of Stirling hosted the 44th Dumyat Hill Race, as 300 people from across the UK converged on the campus to take part in one of Scotland’s most popular hill running events.

The annual event – which started as a bet between a student and lecturer in 1972 – sees participants tackle a gruelling 8km route across tough terrain incorporating a 390m climb to the summit of the overlooking Dumyat hill, before returning to the finish line in the university’s campus.

With competitors enjoying uninterrupted sunshine, Graham Gristwood of Ochil Hill Runners took the overall title with a fantastic time of 32 minutes and 56 seconds, falling just shy of the existing record, while his Ochil teammate Catriona Buchanan won the women’s event with an equally impressive time of 39 minutes and 21 seconds.

Despite the strong performances across the field, the existing race records still remain, with Murray Strain’s 32 minutes and 23 seconds time, set in 2012, holding strong for the men while Angela Mudge will keep her record for another year with runners failing to rival her remarkable 2007 time of 36 minutes and 36 seconds.
