ROBERTSON Group welcomed the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work to its Stirling headquarters on Thursday, March 9 as part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week.

Keith Brown spent the morning with directors and apprentices of the infrastructure firm, and learned of the company's commitment to developing the skills of Scotland’s young people – something the firm has championed throughout its 50 year history.

As part of his tour, he met with four Robertson Construction apprentices, who spoke of the projects and qualifications they are working on, as well as how their experience so far has helped shape their career paths.

Mr Brown said: "The construction industry is a cornerstone of Scotland’s economy and it is vital that we’re supplying it with the skills needed for the future.

"Modern Apprenticeships are an important contributor to our society and economy, promoting economic development and reducing unemployment.

"They are also a vital asset for young people looking to access rewarding careers and high quality jobs which are matched to the current and future needs of the labour market.

"I was delighted to visit Robertson Construction today to see how they are providing training and development opportunities within the sector."

Andy Mallice, managing director, Robertson Construction Scotland, said: "As part of our commitment to supporting the Scottish Government’s youth employment strategy, it was a pleasure to welcome Mr Brown to our headquarters and introduce him to the next generation of construction leaders.

"Providing development and training opportunities to young people is essential in safeguarding the future of the Scottish construction industry, and we are committed to providing opportunities across the board, from foundation to graduate level apprenticeships.

"To have the chance to discuss the future strategies in place to develop Scotland’s economy allows us to tailor and develop the correct opportunities required to ensure the Scottish construction sector continues to thrive."

Throughout Scottish Apprenticeship Week, Robertson Group ran a number of events and challenges, designed to inspire its young workforce.

Events included a team money making challenge as well as ‘back to the floor’ work shadowing, where apprentices and directors had their roles reversed for the day.

The Robertson Group’s social media accounts were also taken over by an apprentice for a day.

This activity offered an insight into the role of an apprentice and helped them enhance their own marketing and communication skills.

One of the UK’s largest infrastructure firms, Robertson Group currently employs 90 apprentices across its 21 businesses.

Through its Young People Strategy, Investors in Young People accreditation and its solid investment in learning and development, providing trade and modern apprenticeships is of great importance to the firm.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week (March 6-10) is an annual campaign to celebrate the benefits apprenticeships bring to individuals, businesses and the economy.
