SP Energy Networks launched this year’s PowerWise Champions campaign with primary schools in Stirling to raise awareness of power cut safety, ahead of the coming winter months.

PowerWise Champions is an initiative from SP Energy Networks which encourages pupils to learn about the importance of electricity and staying safe around it through a free online educational resource which is available to teachers, parents and kids.

Following a lesson in power safety at school using the online resources, pupils in Stirling will compete in a drawing challenge to win their school an iPad mini, a visit from an SP Energy Networks engineers and the chance to be part of an exciting power safety video which will become an online tool for next year’s resources.

The competition also encourages schools to nominate their PowerWise Champion; a school representative who will be a power safety ambassador for their school and able to advise their friends on how to behave and what to do in the event of a power cut.

Caryn Jack, district general manager at SP Energy Networks, said: “Recognising equipment on the electricity network and how to stay safe around it helps children make safer decisions if they experience a power emergency and gives them an understanding of what to do during a power cut.

"Our PowerWise Champion competition is a chance for schools to really engage with the topic of electricity and become knowledgeable about a subject that can be an important lesson in the school curriculum. We’re really looking forward to seeing the creative drawings from school pupils across Stirling.”

Mrs A Ross, headteacher at Bannockburn Primary School, added: “The PowerWise resource is an engaging, creative and fun way for our teachers to help develop an awareness of power safety in our children.

"We’ll definitely be entering the competition and encouraging our children to find this year’s PowerWise Champion."

PowerWise is a free teaching resource available to school teachers to help educate pupils on the importance of electricity and staying safe around it. All lesson ideas are interactive, engaging and linked to English, Welsh and Scottish curricula. Teachers and parents can register to access the free resources at powerwise.org.uk.

The competition closes on Monday, December, 19. For more information, email spnetworks@stripecommunications.com or visit www.powerwise.org.uk
