Stirling Castle has been ranked as one of Britain’s most popular castles to visit according to data from almost three million heritage travellers across the world.

The iconic Stirling Castle in Stirlingshire has been revealed as one of Britain’s most popular castles with heritage tourists. The striking fortification, which has remained a focal point for many of the most important events in Scotland’s history, was the sixth most popular UK castle in results released by leading cultural travel portal Historvius as part of its 2016 Global Heritage List.

While a number of Britain’s most famous castles featured prominently in the list, heritage travellers were also focused on less frequented fortifications, such as the part-Roman

Portchester Castle in Hampshire and Anglesey’s Beaumaris Castle which crept in at number ten.

The 2016 Global Heritage List looked at data from almost three million heritage travellers who use Historvius to research and explore the world’s cultural sites.

Highlighting the mix of prominent British castles alongside lesser known gems, Mike Lewis, CEO of Historvius said: “Britain’s castles rank among the very best heritage sites to explore in the world. As well as iconic fortresses such as Windsor and Stirling lie literally hundreds of astonishing places to explore, from ancient earthworks and Roman forts to medieval masterpieces of fortification design.”
