Active Stirling volunteer Jennifer Murray has been working with Stirling Cycle Hub (SCH) for the past three months.

Jen has been supporting the Meander Bike Rides run by Stirling Cycle Hub in partnership with Active Stirling.

These recreational social rides are slow paced and aimed at those returning to cycling after a long break, injury or those who would like to ride their bike but lack the knowledge, experience or confidence to do it.

All meander rides are designed by SCH to showcase existing safe cycle routes and cycling infrastructure around Stirling and are tailored to specific user needs.

Jennifer highlighted the experience and enjoyment she is gaining from volunteering: "I first heard about the cycling group through Active Stirling. I was asked if I would be interested in volunteering with group.

"I was delighted and so grateful for the opportunity, it combined my two favourite things cycling and the community. As a sports studies student, who has previously studied community education and development, I have always been interested in working with people and always had a passion about the life changing potential of physical activity and sport.

“Each and every meeting I have attended has been amazing. During the month that the club has officially been off, I have regularly gone to the 'informal meanders'.

"I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone, sharing stories and really learning from them all.

"The cycle hub provided me with the opportunity to complete 'cycle ride leader training' through Cycle Scotland. I would like to express thanks to Active Stirling for making me aware of this great opportunity."

Graham McQueen, Stirling Cycle Hub coordinator, added: "Now in its third year, meander rides have gone from strength to strength. The weekly ride has helped to get more people out on their bikes with some of them for the first time in years.

"It’s is simply great to have so many cyclists out and about in Stirling showcasing great routes.

“We find the rides are not only helping people to discover Stirling by bike and gain confidence, but also increase participant’s fitness through regular participation.”

“The meander rides run throughout the year until the end of October. You can join them by registering with The PEAK.”

Steve MacKinnon, who volunteers with Stirling Cycle Hub and Active Stirling’s Walking Network added: "The meanders have become an unmissable part of my week.

"They feature safe and interesting routes, easy cycling and cafe stops which allow plenty of time for socialising. No wonder we have a large number of both regular attendees and new riders.

"The rides are extremely well run by the Hub, who do all the hard work behind the scenes, so that all we have to do is turn up and have a great time.”
