OVER 200 people attended the Clackmannanshire Sports Council Awards held in Alloa Town Hall last week.

Ten awards were presented, with 65 nominations from 18 different sports, during the event on Thursday (19 March) and the calibre of athletes and coaches was extremely high.

The evening began with a piped march onstage for those in the Wee County who had been involved in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which included baton bearers, athletes, coaches, managers, officials and medical staff.

Among the invited guests to the event were Provost Tina Murphy, councillor Ellen Forson, Alan Milliken, assistant head of education, and vice Lord-Lieutenant Jean Hunter.

Councillor Forson officially opened the event, every nominee collected a certificate for their efforts and the winners received their trophies, Mr Milliken gave a talk about sport and leisure in the county and congratulated those who had been in the running, before provost Murphy delivered closing remarks.

The Junior Award sponsored by the Alloa Advertiser went to Duncan Scott (swimming), Senior Award sponsored by Wasp Leisure to Meggan Dawson-Farrell (wheelchair athletics), Team of the Year sponsored by Russell and Aitken to Andrew McLachlan and Rebecca Norval (equestrian vaulting), Triumph Over Adversity sponsored by Meggan Dawson-Farrell to Claire Robertson (swimming) and The Judy Collier Primary School Team Of The Year went to Strathdevon cross country team.

Secondary School Team of the year sponsored by Munro Greenhouses was given to Lornshill mixed doubles badminton team, Enid Barton Coach Of The Year to Henry Edwards (rugby), Young Leader/ Volunteer sponsored by Steven Campbell went to Chloe Wotherspoon, Services To Sport sponsored by SALSC to Roy Lennon Athletics and Lifetime Contribution To Sport sponsored by Tina Murphy to Alan Aaron (rugby).

- He won a gold in the 4 x 100m free style relay and bronze in the 4 x 200m relay.

- He was part of the 4 x 100m team which won a gold medal at the Youth Olympics.

- And was part of the 4 x 200m Scottish free style relay team that won silver at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Senior Award sponsored by Wasp Leisure: Meggan Dawson Farrell, wheelchair athletics - Meggan has been named in the British Athletics World class podium potential plan, being ranked third in Britain and twelfth in the world.

- She competes at venues throughout the world continuing to set personal best times.

- She won gold at the IWAS World Junior Games in the T54 100m event and qualified for the final of the T54 1500m at Glasgow Commonwealth Games finishing seventh.

Team Of The Year sponsored by Russell and Aitken: Andrew McLachlan and Rebecca Norval, equestrian vaulting - They have formed the most successful Junior Pas de Deux in Great Britain winning the Scottish and British Championship titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

- In 2014 they were both selected by Team GB to compete in all three categories of individual, squad and pas de deux with each achieving the highest placed British vaulters.

- In preparation for senior selection 2015 they competed in the Netherlands in their first CV1 taking an excellent fourth and gaining them an FEI qualifying score for 2015.

Triumph Over Adversity sponsored by Meggan Dawson-Farrell: Claire Robertson, swimming - She competes in regional and national swimming galas winning four gold, two silver and two bronze and has attended two Special Olympic National Games.

- She has won the Arion Swimming Club Shield for most improved swimmer.

- She volunteers as a sports leader in her secondary school and is an ambassador for disability sport and is an inspiration to us all.

The Judy Collier Primary School Team Of The Year: Strathdevon cross country team - At the cross country leagues the P6 and P7 girls both won team trophies for first place, individually winning three gold, two silver and one bronze.

- At the CPSSA X country championships the P6 girls, P6 boys and P7 girls teams all placed first winning four gold, one silver and one bronze with 16 members qualifying for the Regional Championships.

- When competing against schools from all over Scotland they finished a creditable thirteenth in the SSAA Road Relay Championships.

Secondary School Team Of The Year sponsored by Munro Greenhouses: Lornshill mixed doubles badminton team - They won the Clackmannanshire S 5/6 mixed doubles title.

- They then went on to win the U18 Central Schools mixed doubles held at the peak in Stirling.

- Finlay and Sarah then represented Central and Lornshill Academy at the Scottish Schools national badminton Championships at Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth winning the Mixed Doubles Plate Competition.

Enid Barton Coach Of The Year: Henry Edwards, rugby - He has introduced structured development plans for all coaches and a long term player development strategy.

- All first XV matches are videoed for analysis feedback, the team are sitting first in their league just now after finishing sixth last year.

- He provides regular CPD for all Alloa Rugby club coaches and attends CPD sessions at the SRU and International Rugby Board to improve his own knowledge.

- As an IRB accredited trainer he attended a coaching course in Switzerland facilitating a course for professional International rugby coaches.

Young Leader/Volunteer sponsored by Steven Campbell: Chloe Wotherspoon - She has given up hundreds of hours of her time in a variety of roles including marshall, referee, judge, coach, assistant and organiser.

- She volunteers any time of the day, week or year and has helped at gymnastics, badminton, primary and secondary athletics, flames festivals, cross country leagues and swimming galas.

- She sits on the Lornshill CSH committee representing the views of young people and contributing to plans and events.

Services To Sport sponsored by SALSC: Roy Lennon, athletics - He has been involved in athletics for over 30 years coaching both able bodied and disabled athletes.

- He helped one athlete gain selection for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and two athletes selected for national squads for ambulant athletes with disabilities.

-Roy’s knowledge and experience in the sport is immense and he is always willing to learn and adapt to suit the needs of any individual.

Lifetime Contribution To Sport sponsored by Tina Murphy: Alan Aaron, rugby - He turned 80 in January and still has a huge drive to get players out on a Saturday to play rugby.

- He is the second team manager and still phones people every week when there is a fixture.

- He has been involved with Hillfoots RC for over 40 years as a first team player, coach, manager and a past club president.

- His enthusiasm, passion and commitment to rugby is an inspiration to us all.
