Independent councillor Archie Drummond has stepped down from his role on the Licensing Board.

The councillor, who has been on the board since 2012, said his decision to quit came down to ‘prioritising’.

He told the Advertiser, “With the time pressures on me, and the amount of work that needs done, I have other pressing priorities that need to be addressed.” His decision to quit saw councillors discuss his replacement at Thursday’s Clackmannanshire Council meeting.

The Clackmannanshire Licensing Board was reduced from nine elected members to six after the SNP came into power in 2012 – a move opposed by Labour at the time. Again, on Thursday, the opposition called for more elected members on the board.

Labour group leader, councillor Bobby McGill said, “This was a problem waiting to happen. Our group recognised it when these numbers were set up at the time that it would cause problems and it has.” The SNP administration suggested that the council should fill the councillor’s spot and appoint an additional member, while Labour suggested appointing an additional two members. Labour’s recommendation was passed after a vote in which Conservative councillor Alastair Campbell voted with Labour and councillor Drummond abstained.
